The Invisible Inventories Exhibition opens at the National Museums of Kenya on Thursday 18th March 2021. Three years in the making, and combining scientific research and artistic practice, the exhibition reflects on the absence of Kenyan cultural objects archived in Western Museums through scholarly inquiry, artworks and activism. A central tool of this inquiry, is a database that currently identifies over 32,000 objects archived in 30 institutions worldwide.

What does it mean for Kenya to be missing so many of its cultural objects? And what does their presence mean for the museums where they currently reside? Invisible Inventories is an attempt to engage with this asymmetry, and the raw and painful relationship that underlines it. It draws on the diverse experiences of the participants in this project and tries to approach this shared history together.

Please note: museum entry fees apply (find the latest rates here), and the space is open from 8:30am - 5:30pm daily.
